Description

PREVIOUS studies of Joao Ubaldo Ribeiro's historical novel, Viva o povo brasileiro (1984) have made passing references to the forgeries perpetrated by one of the novel's central characters, Amleto Ferreira. (1) As emblematic of all that Ribeiro sees as wrong with Brazil's traditional history, namely class prejudice and racism, Amleto's production of false documents is crucial to the author's critique of both class differentiation and past attempts to paper over Brazil's multi-racial heritage. The novel's motif of forgery also points to the distortion of origins implied by the successful manipulation of spurious texts and illustrates the basic challenge that forgery poses for written reconstructions of the past. Forgery is the creation of false documents. As such it competes with or subverts the authorized production and circulation of meaning. This, of course, has clear affinities with the novelist's task, particularly with regard to those authors who recompose the past through historical fiction. Perhaps the one essential (but crucial) difference between the novelist and the forger is that the former "signs" the text while the latter seeks to hide all authorial responsibility, hoping to evade any association with the fraudulent creation (Romney 196). The investigator of literary hoaxes, Ian Haywood has described forgery as an attempt to "counterfeit authority" through the surreptitious production of a fraudulent "imitation or diabolical double of the meaningful artifact" (10). The source or original text is central to the notion of forgery.
